Video Proof...

... that bad swim strokes are hereditary. :)

Here is R1 doing the front crawl...
">

And this is me doing it...
">

Sorry for the poor video quality - these were taken on my phone - but I would very much appreciate some swim stroke advice please. It still takes me 40mins to swim 1.5km in the pool, so I am not getting much faster, although I am less exhuasted at the end of the swim. When this video was taken, I could still have a conversation after I finished the 1.5km - maybe I am just not swimming hard enough? There doesn't seem to be any Masters swim classes in Singapore, so any advice that you can give will be much appreciated. E.g. Do you use hand paddles? Do they really help build speed? What sort of swim drills do you do?

Have a great week ahead, train safe and God Speed!

Hey R1 looks good! He has the breathimg down :-)I am currently taking swim classes myself. I am doing a number of drills. Email me off line and I will be happy to share them with you!!! Maybe you can pick them up by reading. Me, I need to "see" the demo and then have someone watch me "do". I miised one class and got the handouts for it and was lost, but everyone learns differently. I am told drills will help your technique which will then help you get fast. One strting out shoudl first concentrate on technique and the getting that down; and THEN work on speed. Sorry for the long reply.

Those are good videos (especially R1). Not bad for a phone cam.

Granted, I am not that fast of a swimmer.

High elbows. My right arm is better at this than my left. I have been working on doing one arm drills.

You can swim one length with one hand You can hold a flutter board with the other. I don't bother a flutter board at all as I can balance without it.

Maybe it is time i get a phone with cam as well. I do need an update video of me swimming.

I wish I could offer you some good advice, but I am a beginner. Good luck! :)

Your swim looks good. It appears you might rotate more to the left then the right. You might also try to keep your feet in the water when you kick. It looked like you kick out of the water a bit, which won't give you the momentum that you need. One good exercise that might help is, with high elbows, dragging your fingers up along your side. Wish I had a good video to show you, but those are a few different things that might help.

Hi, I stumbled upon your blog. I know APSC (the swim school at ACJC) holds masters swimming classes. Might be worth checking out. Probably do a google on "APSC Singapore" and see where that gets you?

Cheers,
Debbie.

That time doesn't sound all that bad to me for a pool. With turns and losing breaths on my flip turns (I'm terrible at flip turns!) my pool times are always slower than my open water races.

I don't think paddles help form so much as fins do. I've never used fins but have heard from coaches that they help form. You might want to check on that. Other than that, I think your time indicates you have the basic skills but need only a few minor tweaks and maybe some different workouts. Try beginnertriathlete.com

I suck at swimming and really need to take lessons - problem is I never get in the pool! So you both looked great to me!

I would love to lay some wicked 'swim science' on you but I'm not the gal to do it! ;)
My guy is an icredible swimmer. IM Canada is his favorite IM race but he's completed several. All I know is he works hard to get it right. Good luck!

My Wife swims with the Southern Cross Dragons with the Masters Team with Darren Gum - Contact him at swimmechanic@hotmail.com he takes lessons at the Australian school and at the American Club.

She said you need to not pull so far under your body - hard to tell on small video. Your Body position and kick is good, watch your right arm entry into the water it drops elbow and palm 1st. Your son needs to lower his head and work on his kick - is he getting lessons?

Thanks Geoff
Hope to see you in the Singapore Masters comp. in Feb
I swam this year, it was quite good fun.
