Ok, so I have decided to have a go at my 1st ever Sprint Triathlon - 800m swim, 5km run, and 20km bike. Not a big deal you say? Well, yes... except I am fast approaching 40 and I do not currently exercise regularly.
Swim - I can swim, but cannot even do front crawl for 50m, let alone 800m. This may well be the most challenging.
Run - I have been running off and on, but limited to about 4km max.
Bike - Last time I rode my road bike was about 15 years ago! Do I buy a new bike or re-activate my old bike?
I will use the "comments" to this post to log my daily training, just to keep track of how I am doing towards my goal...

01/03/2005 - Swim (30 mins)
Sigh... The swim event will be a challenge. Cannot even front crawl for 50m! Will need more effort.
02/03/2005 - Bke (30 mins)
Went for a bike ride with my son on the MTB. Will definitely need a road bike to get comfortable and hopefully have a lighter load to peddle.
03/03/05 - Rest Day
04/03/2005 - Run (25 mins)
Not sure of the distance of my usual route. Probably 4km or so?
05/03/05 - Rest Day
Sigh... Didn't do anything at all, but finally collected my OLD road bike after complete servicing and a hefty bill. Also went shopping for cycling stuff like shoes, jersey, etc. All ready to bike now - courtesy of my buddy CM, I even have a bike speedo so I can tell distance and speed. YIPEE!
06/03/05 - Rest Day (again!)
Played tennis with my Care Group so no time to do any training. :(
07/03/05 - Bike (22km, AS: 26.5km/h)
Finally got back on the saddle for my 1st ride in about 13 years. Feels good... that it is over! :)
08/03/2005 - Run (26 mins)
Same route (about 4km), slower time... Legs aching, hope my body is adjusting to the increased exercise level. Being very careful about stretching before exercise, but keep forgetting to do post exercise "development" stretch.
09/03/2005 - Bike (30km, AS:26km/h)
Went for a ride instead of a swim because there will be no more riding for at least 4 days. :( My colleague is borrowing my bike wheels (yes, only the wheels) for his duathlon this weekend. Starting to get comfortable with the bike.
10/03/2005 & 11/03/2005 - Rest
No time to train!!!! :(
12/03/2005 - Swim (800m - 1km?)
Pushed too hard, got a bad cramp in my left calf towards the end of my swim. May have to rest a few days... :(
13/03/2005 - Rest
Left calf still tender... :(
14/03/2005 Easy Run (25 mins, distance???)
Decided to be brave, stretch out my left calf properly, and go for an easy run. Brought the kids biking in the East Coast and went for a run with my 4 yr old on his brand new 16" bike. Was surprised to find that while he was too slow for me on his old 12" bike, he is now too fast for me on this new 16" inch bike. Praise God! Now I have motivation to run faster! :)
15/03/2005 Bike (34.5km, AS: 27.6km/hr)
YeeHah! A little further and a little faster - let's hope this trend continues. :)
Wanted to test my idea of biking before work and realised that I have to wake up a whole lot earlier to have any chance to do that - probably 6:30am latest. Am I committed enough to do that?
16/03/2005 Fun Run (25 mins, distance???)
Went for a run with my boy on his bike again. Good fun and this time managed to keep up with him (most of the way). :)
17/03/2005 - Swim (35 mins, 800m)
This is assuming my pool length is 25m - 32 lengths! :)
Milestone: Actually able to go front crawl all the way, with no rest stops. Quite an achievement for me if you refer to my 1st post on 01/03/2005.
18/03/05 [FRIDAY]
Run (24mins, 4km???)
Gotta get me a Polar S625X so I can tell how far/fast I am actually running. :)
19/03/2005 [SATURDAY]
Swim (800m, 34 mins)
Actually wanted to swim and then bike, but I underestimated (1) how long it would take to warm up and swim, (2) how knackered I would feel after swimming. ;P
20/03/2005 [SUNDAY]
Bike (35km, AS: 27.5km/hr)
Thought I was pushing hard, but result was not much quicker. :(
Having fun on the bike though!
21/03/2005 [MONDAY]
Fun Run with my son on his bike (20 mins).
Hmmm... My son seems to be slowing down on his bike. Maybe time for a change of route to keep things interesting...
22/03/2005 [TUESDAY]
Rest Day - quality time with the family and catching up with some commitments for the Toddler's Playgroup. :)
23/03/2005 [WEDNESDAY]
Swim (900m, 40 mins)
Need to improve my stroke, very slow in swim.
24/03/2005 [THURSDAY]
Fun run with my son. (20 mins, ??km)
25/03/2005 [FRIDAY]
Bike (35km, AS:29km/hr)
Went biking with 2 buddies on their OBEA bikes - boy, were they fast and it wasn't all because of their nice bikes. :)
This is my fastest ride yet and it is opening my eyes to how much ground I have to make up in terms of pace and endurance. Determined to push myself harder.
26/03/2005 [SATURDAY]
Swim (900m, 40 mins)
27/03/2005 [SUNDAY]
Run (23:15 mins, 4km?)
Ok ok, I will go measure the distance of my usual route...
28/03/2005 [MONDAY]
Swim (32mins, 850m)
Tried to "improve" my stroke today after reading some stuff on the Internet. Ended up being rather uncomfortable -> got a strained shoulder and water clogged ear as a result. :(
29/03/2005 [TUESDAY]
Rest - Sore shoulder and water clogged ear disturbing my sleep... :(
30/03/2005 [WEDNESDAY]
Run (23mins, 4km???)
31/03/2005 [THURSDAY]
Bike (35km, AS:28.5km/hr)
01/04/2005 [FRIDAY]
Swim (4 X 200M, 8mins each rep)
Decided to try something different to improve swim - broke up my swim into 4 "reps" of 200m (8 X 25m each rep). Gave myself 8mins per rep - took about 7mins to complete swim and rest 1 min before next rep. I found that I could better concentrate on the stroke and get a better workout. Hope it is the start of betta swim times. :)
02/04/2005 [SATURDAY]
Group Ride (20km, AS:29km/hr)
Went for a group ride with my old buddy CM and church frens, but got rained out! Soaked but had a blast biking in the rain. :) Had to cut short the ride though... :(
03/04/2005 [SUNDAY]
Rest - New maid and my wife is sick, so have to help out at home.
04/04/2005 [MONDAY]
Rest - New maid decided to quit after 1 week. My wife is still sick, so again I could not get out of the house for any exercise.
GOOD NEWS: Managed to round up another church fren for the Sat group ride. Our cycle group has gone up to 6. :)
05/04/2005 [TUESDAY]
Rest - 3rd continuous day of no exercise (see above). I guess this is turning out to be my rest week (read somewhere that it is good to have one rest week per month).
BAD NEWS: Finally took a drive and measured out my usual run route - what I had hoped would be >4km is actually only 3.9km. :( Will have to try longer routes to get at least 5km per run.
06/04/2005 [WEDNESDAY]
Run (5km?, 30mins?)
My Casio's battery died so I timing and distance are both estimates this time. May take this opportunity to replace the watch with a Polar S625X. :(
07/04/2005 [THURSDAY]
Rest
08/04/2005 [FRIDAY]
Rest
Bit the bullet and bought a Polar S625X!
09/04/2005 [SATURDAY]
Bike (58kn, AS:28.5km/hr)
Group ride with my buddies - this is turning out to be a weekly event that I look forward to. Feels good to be able to keep up on my old bike! :)
10/04/2005 [SUNDAY]
Swim (4 x 200m, 4 X 8mins)
Swim times seem to be improving slightly as I can focus on my strokes more. I also seem to be getting a better work-out for my arms in the swim. Hope to be able to transition to 2 X 400m in another week.
11/04/2005 [MONDAY]
Rest Day
12/04/2005 [TUESDAY]
Run (5km, 34.5min)
Took my Polar S625X out for a run today for the 1st time. Very cool to be able to go anywhere and yet know the distance I have covered. Had a family dinner at the East Coast and was able to put the Polar to good use and go for a run by the sea before dinner. No more being unsure about how far I have run!
13/04/2005 [WEDNESDAY]
Rest
14/04/2005 [THURSDAY]
Swim (20mins, Distance=??)
Had some team building event @ work and decided to go for a swim after that. Sigh, 20 mins into the swim I started getting a cramp in my leg and had to stop. :( Guess the team building thing was more physically straining than I thought.
15/04/2005 [FRIDAY]
Rest
16/04/2005 [SATURDAY]
Bike (55km, AS:29km/hr)
Saturday Group Ride with CM & co.
17/04/2005 [SUNDAY]
Rest
18/04/2005 [MONDAY]
Rest
19/04/2005 [TUESDAY]
Run (5km, 30mins)
Tried to do a Max heart rate test - managed to get to 181bpm which is still a gap from the 187bmp suggested by the polar. In hind sight, perhaps I sould have pushed myself more? Hmmmm....
Sorry, got my Polar 625X in May and found that it has a great training dairy in the supplied software, so I am too lazy to continue to update my training log here. ;)
